Attending Veterinarian
Surpass, Inc.


BASIC SUMMARY: The Attending Veterinarian will have the overall responsibility for the veterinary care and animal husbandry program. This position is also responsible for providing direct and indirect consultation and support for maintaining the health and welfare of all animals housed at Surpass in compliance with applicable standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards and regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Responsibility for the Animal Welfare Program. Includes developing and maintaining a program that promotes and maintains excellence in the areas of animal health, animal care and enrichment, and veterinary support for a variety of pre-clinical research studies. Advises on issues related to facility, surgical modeling, biosecurity, regulatory, and vendor selection as it relates to animal care and use. Animal Care: Animal husbandry standards as they relate to housing, nutrition, environment, sanitation & disease control, animal handling & transport, and enrichment. Surgery: Surgical standards as they relate to analgesia, anesthesia, and asepsis. Veterinary support in animal model development and incorporation of study needs with acceptable animal management. Post-Op Care: Veterinary practices and standards as they relate to pain management, wound care, antibiotic therapy, supportive care, diagnostics and therapeutics required for the management of a variety of post-surgical needs. Pathology: Works with pathologists and necropsy staff to maintain monitoring vigilance for health related issues in all animal species. Scientific Staff: Works with study directors and coordinators to develop studies that comply with the company’s committment to wise animal use and provide high quality results to the client. Includes advising on appropriate animal models and the development of new models. Facility: Oversight of biosecurity and disease control for the facility. Includes facility dress code requirements, traffic flow and restricted access to animal areas, zoonoses awareness (staff awareness of job related risks and obligations), and disaster planning.

•Provides oversight and direction for all animal related activities to ensure that they are conducted in accordance with Good Lab Practices (GLP), the Animal Welfare Act, and The Guide.
•Manages Veterinary staff. Including: scheduling daily and emergency veteriniary coverage; assigning veterinary support to study needs; oversight for development and maintenance of veterinary program processes and procedures.
•Collaborates directly with management to anticipate future client needs, collaborating in the development of new products and services as client requirements evolve.
•Attending Vet Duties: controlled substances USDA, AAALAC, Regulatory Compliance.
•Maintains a safe and healthy work environment that complies with all safety policies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:
•Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine required
•Experience: Minimum of five years experience in a laboratory animal environment required. Management and personnel development experience preferred. Must possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
•Certification/Licensure: Licensed in the US
